The Program

An attractive, sustainable Alpine area is of eminent significance to the societies not only of Switzerland but of all of Europe. This NRP supports the discussion on the future of this habitat, and the active shaping of processes that enable a sustainable use of this valuable resource. General Goals

Within the framework of National Research Programmes (NRP), research projects are carried out which contribute to the solution of current problems. The problem-oriented research of the NRP combines basic and applied research in interdisciplinary approaches. Implementation and validation of research results is an important goal of the National Research Programmes.

The NRP 48 adopts the objectives of the Federal Government's research policy in the fields of sustainable development and environment and it forms a general framework for Alp-oriented research in Switzerland. Overall, the creation of an increased awareness of the collective goods of landscape and habitat with their extensive social significance is promoted.

The NRP aims to acquire the knowledge on goals and actions needed for a socially desired, economically acceptable and politically feasible landscape development. En-dogenous and exogenous causalities of landscape development should be recognised, requirements and standards for a sustainable landscape development should be analysed and possible approaches in the relevant political fields and scopes of actions should be elaborated.

Research work is coordinated in five main topic areas. Through an implementation strategy, the NRP's results will continually be exchanged and evaluated with interested persons and institutions.

The results of the new NRP programme will help authorities, political decision makers (Federal Government, Cantons, Municipalities) and economic actors to recognise landscape-relevant tasks, to co-ordinate them with the agreed objectives, and to make efficient use of all available resources. Local actors (agriculture and forestry, tourism, nature and environment protection, regional planning, transport and energy, construction sector and architecture) will need to discover new perspectives and action programmes for a conscientious and sustainable treatment of the cultural landscape, the natural landscape, biodiversity, water and energy.

The NRP will maintain collaboration and exchange with simultaneous research activities on a European and international level; the Swiss participation in different EU and international research programmes will support the NRP programme's aims.
